PREAMBLE
As a representative of the Ohio Mathematics & Science Coalition, each member has the responsibility to assist in ensuring the success of OMSC, helping to achieve its mission, and representing OMSC through the member's constituency organizations. Coalition Members' responsibilities include those listed below.
- Support the staff in carrying out OMSC's objectives and assist with Executive Board involvement in long-range planning to establish OMSC's general course for the future (Strategic Planning).
- Identify, cultivate, and solicit prospective supporters.
- Assist with the development and maintenance of communication links for advocating and promoting OMSC's work among all constituencies represented by the Coalition.
INDIVIDUAL COALITION MEMBER RESPONSIBILITIES
- General Expectations
- Understand OMSC's objectives, goals, policies, programs, services, strengths, and needs.
- Undertake special assignments willingly and enthusiastically.
- Follow trends in areas important in carrying out OMSC's Vision.
- Bring good will and a sense of humor to the Coalition's deliberations.
- Meetings
- Prepare for and participate in Coalition meetings and other appropriate OMSC activities.
- Ask timely and substantive questions at Coalition meetings consistent with your conscience.
- Support the majority decision on issues decided by the Coalition.
- Exercise appropriate discretion and maintain confidentiality regarding OMSC and its activities.
- Suggest agenda items periodically for Coalition and/or Board meetings to ensure that significant, policy-related matters are addressed.

- Avoid asking for special favors of the staff, including special requests for extensive information, without at least prior consultation with the Executive Director, Board, or appropriate OMSC Member.
- Encourage communication among members and their constituencies.
- Avoiding Conflicts
- Serve OMSC as a whole rather than any special interest group or constituency. Regardless of whether or not a Coalition Member is invited to fill a vacancy reserved for a certain constituency or organization, the first obligation is to avoid any preconception that he or she "represent" anything but OMSC's best interests.
- Avoid even the appearance of a conflict of interest that might embarrass the OMSC and disclose any possible conflicts to the Board in a timely fashion.
- Maintain independence and objectivity and do what a sense of fairness, ethics, and personal integrity dictate, even though not necessarily obligated to do so by law, regulation, or custom.
- Never accept (or offer) favors or gifts from (or to) anyone who does business with OMSC.
- Minimum Coalition Member Commitments
- Attend Coalition Meetings on a regular basis.
- In addition to attending Coalition Meetings, participate in the work of other OMSC activities where appropriate.
- Devote a fair amount of time assisting OMSC in achieving its goals.
- Keep current on all communications related to OMSC, i.e. OMSC Web Site, all written correspondence, meeting minutes, email correspondence, voice mail messages, etc.
