ACT Reports 2009 - Are High School Graduates Underprepared
for College and Ohio's Emerging Workforce?
Fall 2009
Ohio's college-intending students are underprepared in mathematics and science according to a recent report from ACT. Just 46% of Ohio students taking the 2009 ACT exam met the benchmark score for mathematics, and only 33% met the benchmark score for science. Only 26% of test-takers surpassed the benchmarks in all areas measured. Benchmark scores are used by ACT and other organizations as predictors of college success and the likelihood of degree attainment. According to census data compiled in 2002, Ohio ranks in the bottom third (41st) of all states in the percentage of the population holding a four-year degree, or higher, by age 25. Raising college readiness, work readiness and degree attainment is a critical goal for Ohio's long-term competitiveness.
